The Climbing Yogi
By Elyssa Candal
There is a vast world of mountains that await to be summited, each with their own level of difficulty. There’s a challenge to those who seek out the thrill of the climb, the thrill of life. Like any challenge, there are also underlying fears: fears of not being able to accomplish the task at hand or of being hurt.
The Climber’s Dilemma
There comes a point when a climber either finds that they are not flexible or strong enough to get to the next move on a route or they are so high up on a route, their mind starts to play games with them and let their fear get out of control. But there is hope! Many climbers have found the practice of yoga to help overcome those obstacles. Yoga physically and mentally transforms the way you climb by gaining strength and flexibility. Through mental strength, you will conquer your fears.
Yoga to the Rescue
Yoga is a powerful tool that can be used to maximize your climbing performance in every way. Through the practice of yoga, you will enhance your strength to make those big moves you thought you weren’t capable of. It will help you become flexible enough to hike your leg up high on a foot hold and to balance on your feet while you let go of one hold to reach for another. Your joint mobility will also increase the range in your body’s movements. Not only will it improve your climbing, but it also has many benefits to your physical and mental well-being. The awareness you bring to the route you challenge will give you the courage to face any of the obstacles set before you, to have control with every hand and foot placement. Your breath and movement will work together as one. You will become The Climbing Yogi.
