Got Questions About Teams?

Competitive Climbing

Competitive Climbing

Competition Climbing is an exciting individual sport.  There are several formats in competition climbing. In all formats the team member is competing with youth their same age.

Speed climbing is a timed sport.  The climber begins when their foot leaves the ground and ends when they touch the timer at the top to stop the clock.  It is fun, exciting, and all ages can compete.

Sport climbing generally offers two formats for climbing competitions.  With the on-sight format, the climber is given one chance to get to the top.  Each hold is given a point value.  The climber gets full points if they get to the top.  Climbers are not allowed to see the route before climbing it, and must wait for their turn to climb.  Usually they climb 3-4 routes, and the scores are cumulated to give the climber’s final score.

The red-point format is a little more laid back.  The climber is given a fixed amount of time to complete their routes.  This is usually 2.5 to 3 hours.  Each climb is given a fixed value.

The Bouldering formats are similar to those used in Sport climbing, but scoring for Bouldering is based on zones/tops instead of each hold.

The Regional, Divisional, and National competitions formats vary, but are typically on-sight.
